12 Wonderful 1-2 Hour Walks in Edinburgh

Every month, The Outsiders meet in a beautiful location across Edinburgh to walk, talk, and connect with fellow freelancers and solopreneurs.

We’re truly spoiled for choice in this remarkable city, with spectacular scenery and interesting natural landscapes surrounding us at every turn. Over the year, we’ve curated a collection of great walks that are perfect for 1-2 hours, ideal for social outings or business walk-and-talks.

Here are our favourite walking routes in no particular order:

1. Musselburgh Lagoons

Beautiful year-round, Musselburgh Lagoons is renowned for its bird life. It’s particularly fascinating during spring and autumn migrations. This coastal walk takes you through lagoons and marshes, offering a diverse landscape and incredible wildlife viewing opportunities.

2. River Esk Walkway from Musselburgh

A beautiful route from Eskmills along a broad, meandering riverside path. In early spring, wild garlic fills the air with its distinctive aroma. Take a detour to the charming village of Inveresk and explore the beautiful Inveresk Lodge Gardens. Pro tip: Stop by Company Bakery at Eskmills for a delightful coffee and pastry.

3. River Almond Walk from Cramond

A peaceful out-and-back walk along the River Almond, winding through woods and following the riverbank. It’s rarely crowded, making it perfect for those seeking a tranquil escape from the city.

4. Cramond Island

A truly unique walking experience! Accessible only during low tide via a causeway, this walk feels like a real adventure. Climb the hill on Cramond Island for breathtaking views of Edinburgh from the sea. Check tide times carefully before attempting this walk.

5. Calton Hill

The most accessible hill in Edinburgh, Calton Hill offers spectacular 360-degree city views. It’s perfect for a midday picnic, sunrise, or sunset walk. From here, you can see panoramic views stretching from the Pentlands to Fife.

6. Hermitage of Braids & Blackford Hill

Particularly stunning in autumn when the leaves change color, this walk combines a glorious woodland experience with a city view. Climb Blackford Hill for a lovely perspective over Edinburgh. The Lodge Coffee House serves as an excellent meeting point.

Follow the Water of Leith through wooded dells and discover the iconic Colinton Tunnel. Adorned with stunning murals created by local children, it’s like walking through an outdoor art gallery.

8. Arthur’s Seat & The Crags

Edinburgh’s highest peak offers an invigorating climb. While popular with tourists, quieter routes exist around the south side of the hill. Exercise caution during high winds and choose a route that matches your fitness level.

An iconic urban walking route through the heart of the old town. Meander along the water’s edge, enjoying spectacular historic buildings. Keep your eyes peeled for wildlife – you might spot an otter or a kingfisher!

Experience the Pentland Hills with this leisurely loop around Harlaw Reservoir. Surrounded by stunning landscapes, you’ll feel worlds away from the city. Brave souls might even enjoy a refreshing swim.

11. Dr Neil’s Garden, Duddingston

Not strictly a walk, but an absolute hidden gem. Founded by physicians who cultivated medicinal plants, this beautiful garden is a secret worth discovering. You’d never stumble upon it without knowing where to look!

Another non-traditional “walk” that offers endless exploration. Spectacular in springtime when rhododendrons bloom, these gardens provide a tranquil urban escape. Bring a laptop and work outside in this serene setting.
