The Outsiders: One year on…

What happens when you combine the beautiful landscapes of Edinburgh, and community of passionate freelancers?

The Outsiders happened – and the first year has been EPIC!

To mark the first year, we did a short survey to learn more about our community and what they value about this group.

A Year in Numbers

In 2024, The Outsiders transformed from a simple idea into a vibrant community of 166 adventurers. Twelve excursions took members across Edinburgh’s stunning landscapes – from the iconic Arthur’s Seat to the serene Musselburgh Lagoons, the unique Cramond Island, and the rolling Pentland Hills.

The community is rapidly growing, with as of January 2025:

  • 325 members on LinkedIn
  • 200 subscribers to their mailing list
  • A tight-knit WhatsApp group of 50 active members

Who Are the Outsiders?

This isn’t just another networking group. The Outsiders is a growing community of self-employed professionals, representing a wide range of professions. Most consider themselves “outdoorsy” and are passionate about spending time in nature.

But it’s not just about beautiful landscapes. The group addresses a critical challenge many freelancers face: isolation.

More Than Just Meetups

Members repeatedly highlighted the transformative power of the community. Their testimonials paint a powerful picture:

“I feel relaxed, engaged with nature and fellow Outsiders, inspired and happy.”

“I feel like I belong now to this lovely group of people. I feel accepted and free.”

“If you told me I’d find a networking event I’d enjoy, I’d have thought you were mad. But this one I look forward to. I feel like I’ve found my tribe.”

The Outsiders has created a unique space where professional connections happen organically, without the pressure of forced networking. Members speak of “genuine connections” and “durable relationships” formed in a low-pressure, supportive environment.

Looking Ahead to 2025

Listening to their community, The Outsiders have outlined three key focus areas for the coming year:

  1. Continuing monthly events with an inclusive, relaxed atmosphere
  2. Introducing skill-sharing and learning opportunities
  3. Developing a flexible volunteer structure to further engage members

The Bigger Picture

In a world where remote work can often feel isolating, The Outsiders proves that community can be intentionally created. By combining outdoor experiences, professional networking, and genuine human connection, they’re redefining what community means for Edinburgh’s freelancers and flexible workers.

If you’re a freelancer in Edinburgh feeling disconnected, this might just be the community you’ve been searching for!
